Pyruvic acid: Deeper skin rejuvenation

Pyruvic acid remodeling properties may be compared to those of TCA peels. Nevertheless, it merely causes a very mild erythema.

Gel texture and extremely acidic pH allow the peels to
uniformly and slowly penetrate the skin with only a very mild prickling sensation. Pyruvic acid induces both epidermal and dermal effects.

Pyruvic acid

Pyruvic acid is an alpha keto acid with three carbon atoms. Pyruvic acid is a medium-high strength acid that is present in nature in honey, apples, fermented fruit, and vinegar.

In solution it is converted to its corresponding AHA Lactic acid resulting in antiseptic, sebostatic and comedolytic activities. Pyruvic acid diminishes the cohesion of epidermal corneocytes, preventing thickening of the horny layer.

Lactic acid diminishes cohesion of corneocytes and prevents thickening of the horny layer. Increases the thickness of the epidermis and the dermis and stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastic fibers in the dermal layer of the skin, so that, over a period of time, the skin surface begins to look younger and smoother.

Lactic acid has a bleaching effect on the skin colour as it promotes a homogenous dispersion of the melanin granules and it exerts an anti-oxidant effect. In addition, it inhibits the actions of tyrosinase, an enzyme that actively participates in the initial stages of melanogenesis
